If you have just welcomed a new kitten into the home, you may have wondered how to get him used to the litter box. The majority of cats adopt it very early to do their business and continue to use it correctly throughout their life. Here are some tips for instilling this good habit in your little feline.
BASIC TIPS
Tip #1: Make sure you have enough litter boxes.
It is important that your cat has access to enough litter boxes. It is recommended to have one more box than the number of cats. So, if your kitten is the only cat in the house, the ideal is to have two litter boxes.
Tip #2: Keep the litter box clean.
Kitty likes to do her business in a clean place (and we understand that). Remove soiled litter at least once a day and wash the entire box (with soapy water and change of sand) at least once a week.
Tip #3: Use a litter box that is suitable for your cat.
Prefer an unscented and non-dusty clumping litter. This is suitable for most cats. Note, however, that there are many types of litter on the market and your cat may prefer another variety. Once you determine which litter is best for your feline, avoid changing it.
WHAT TO DO IF YOUR KITTEN REFUSES THE LITTER BOX
If your new companion doesn't seem to like the litter box, here are some tips that might help you convince him to use it:
The Location
Cats need privacy too. Avoid installing litter boxes in passageways or busy areas.
The Litter
Sand, gravel, paper, corn, scented, odorless, clumping, non-clumping. Your cat may have a preference for a particular texture that you need to discover!
The Double Bottom
Some bins have a double bottom for easier cleaning. Although they are convenient for humans, some cats hate them. Try removing the false bottom if there is one.
The Height of the Edges
Very young cats may have difficulty climbing or climbing more than 10 cm to reach the litter box. Something to keep in mind if your kitten is still very young!
The cover
Remove the cover that traps odors and dust from the litter box. Maybe your kitten will enjoy the litter box more this way.
The Odour
Add an ammonia odor neutralizer in and around the litter box to eliminate bad odors.
Feline Pheromones
Add calming feline pheromones around the litter box.
If all else fails and your kitten still refuses to use the litter box, don't hesitate to discuss it with your veterinarian.
