It’s vacation time…we’re going to travel!!! Organize a little trip with your dog or cat! Good idea! But be careful not to forget anything!
First, ensure your pet’s vaccinations are up to date, especially the rabies vaccine if traveling to the U.S. or abroad, which must be done 30 days before departure. Additional vaccines may be required, even in Quebec, especially if your pet will be exposed to risks like leptospirosis or ticks. For boarding or kennel stays, make sure your pet has its basic vaccinations, including kennel cough for dogs. Preventive measures, like tick treatments, are highly recommended.
Next, consider your mode of transport and whether your pet will be comfortable. It's essential to prepare them in advance, whether it's getting used to a carrier with positive reinforcement or taking short car trips. If your pet experiences motion sickness, anxiety, or discomfort, consult your vet for tips or medications to help ease the journey and make the trip more pleasant for both of you.
If traveling abroad, make sure to obtain the required health forms from MAPAQ, completed by your vet at least 30 days before departure. Bring your pet's health records, any necessary medications, and a small health kit. Consider including Benadryl for allergic reactions, along with supplies for bandages and a DEET-free mosquito repellent if heading into the wilderness. Don’t forget your pet’s bowls and waste bags to keep your environment clean!
On that note, have a good trip and enjoy your family vacation!
