Toxic Products for Birds

  • Overheated Teflon coatings (pans, casseroles, others).
  • Certain foods: chocolate, alcohol, avocado, raw potato, fruit pit and seed, onion, beetroot leaves, coffee, tea, raw egg, raw meat, sweet/salty/fatty foods.
  • Anything that can be suspended/aerosolized in the air: scented candles, incense, perfumes, household deodorants, essential oils, so-called “berger” lamps, spray products, etc.
  • All forms of emanations: household cleaners (strong odor), paint, cigarettes, solvents, glue, dyes, gas.
  • Some cage bottom substrates: sandpaper, gravel, cracked corn ("corn cob"), cat litter of any kind, sand, wood shavings (especially cedar and pine).
  • Insecticides and herbicides, electrical wires and telephone wires.
  • Anything that is already toxic to humans is probably toxic to birds too.
  • A multitude of medicines for humans or other animals.
  • Multiple plants: the list is very long, so if in doubt, abstain.
  • Heavy metals: lead, mercury, zinc, copper, gilding, etc.
  • Tiffany lamps, the wall painting itself or that for the cage bars, certain toys intended or not for birds, carabiners, bread clips, etc.

The purpose of this list is not to scare you, but rather to make you aware that there are many dangers present in our homes for birds. However, daily exercise is ideal for your bird. That being said, we suggest that you never let your bird loose without close supervision.
